Verdant Power’s New York City Tidal Turbines Exceed Expectations
New York, NY, January 27, 2021 – Verdant Power’s one-half scale demonstration project, of a grid-connected array of three, five-meter diameter rotor tidal power turbines, has performed excellently and exceeded expectations during the three months since deployment. The turbines, deployed on a single TriFrame™ mount at the Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) Project site in the East River, have performed at 100 percent availability. This high reliability is critical to cost-competitive green energy.
As the first U.S. licensed tidal power project site, the RITE Project activity is a technology demonstration of the Company’s fifth-generation tidal power system and its novel TriFrame™ mounting system, which is the next step on a pathway to global commercialization and profitable commercial operations. The deployment of Verdant Power’s turbine array on October 22, 2020 began providing clean electricity seven days later to Roosevelt Island through a distributed generation connection to Con Edison’s New York City grid.
The array has generated 100 MWh in only 85 days of continuous operation, a record for marine energy production in the United States. This is far sooner than projected, which means that it is on track to generate more than 430 MWh per year into the local grid. This pre-commercial demonstration of Verdant Power’s proprietary integrated system is designed to optimize the economics of installation and maintenance over the system’s 20-year life, and to prove performance. The design of these turbines provides for readily scalable systems to larger sizes for deeper and faster tidal straits.
“The RITE Project provides the metrics for system performance, and operational costs, which are scalable to other sites, and demonstrates a marine renewable energy project as distributed generation for alternative global market opportunities,” said Verdant Power Chief Technology Officer, Dean Corren.
The RITE Project is generating electricity under a pilot project license issued by the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. It will be the first marine renewable energy project in the world to be validated to international standards. The Project is supported by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the U.S. Department of Energy, in addition to New York private equity investors.
