Move to Generation 5 (Gen5) KHPS
Development of the 5th Generation (Gen5) KHPS continues based on prior generation operations. The Gen5 KHPS represents a commercially economical design for longevity, reliability and environmental compatibility. The design cycle has focused on minimizing maintenance requirements by maximizing service intervals and achieving economic volume manufacturing and assembly. The Gen5 KHPS is Verdant Power's standard system for commercial installations.

With support from the US Department of Energy, Verdant Power is currently in the process of performing pre-commercial testing on key components of the KHPS turbine. Once testing is completed, the Gen5 KHPS will enter commercial manufacturing for installation at the RITE Project and upcoming projects.
Advancement of KHPS Turbine Rotor Blades
Verdant Power completed a project with co-funding from the US Department of Energy to design, manufacture and test a larger, higher-power turbine rotor to expand the application potential of the KHPS into deeper, faster waters.
Conducted in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the University of Minnesota's St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, among others, the project used evolving turbine modeling techniques along with CFD and FEA to design, analyze and optimize the new rotor. The composite blades were also designed for cost-effective volume production. The new blades were fabricated and thoroughly tested, both in the lab and at full scale in the water.
The effort culminated in the successful full-scale (5m diameter) in-water dynamometry and loads testing of the full rotor assembly (blades and hub) at Verdant Power's RITE Project site in September 2012. This new rotor design is planned for use on Gen5 KHPS turbines to be installed at the RITE Project and future commercial installations, including at larger scales.
Verdant Isles Ltd. Formed to Develop Tidal Energy Projects in Ireland and UK
